How to Measure your Kids Pants Size

Clothing sizes are not universal. Your child can be a size 7 in one brand and a size 8 in another. That means knowing your kid’s pants size is not enough when trying to find a pair of pants that fit right. What you need to know are your child’s exact body measurements. Then, you can match them to the corresponding size as indicated in the sizing guide of a specific clothing brand.

And so, if you need to know your child’s pants size, grab a measuring tape and do the legwork yourself. And for children’s pants, you need to take note of your kid’s waist, hips, and inseam.

  • Waist: Wrap the measuring tape around the child’s natural waist, which is near the bellybutton area.
  • Hips: The child should stand with both feet together. The fullest part of the hips should be measured.
  • Inseam: Bring the tape from the uppermost part of your child’s inner thigh (the crotch area) all the way down to his or her ankle.

Once you have the exact measurements, you may then refer to the kids pants size charts on this site to find the corresponding trouser size.

How to convert Kids’ Pants Sizes

Different countries observe varying standards on clothing sizes. For example, kids’ sizes in the US, UK, and Australia are based on the age of the child. Meanwhile, Europe’s clothing sizes for children are based on a kid’s height in centimeters. If you need to convert from the American to European sizing, then you need an international size chart which provides specific measurements. This way, if you have your child’s pants measurements in inches, you can simply convert them to centimeters. Then, you can match it with the corresponding clothing size as indicated on the conversion size chart.

You may refer to the international conversion table below as a guide. However, keep in mind that measurements provided by the chart are merely generic approximates. They may not exactly match the measurements found on the sizing guide used by a particular clothing brand or retailer.

How to convert girl’s pants sizes into boys’ pants sizes and vice versa

As toddlers, there’s virtually no difference in how pants are structured between boys and girls. However, as kids grow, their body’s start to change depending on their sex. That is why after size 6X, children’s clothing gets divided further into boys’ and girls’ sizes. Boys start growing at faster rate than girls, and their frame is usually bigger, too. On the other hand, girls eventually experience changes in their hip, waist, and chest. As they grow up, they start to develop a fuller bust and a curvier body.

  • Dress Pants: Stylish (usually pleated) pants with angled or slick pockets made of wool, rayon, or polyester blends
  • Overalls: Pants with a bodice or bib attached to the waistline and covers the chest
  • Leggings, Tights: Very fitted (or skin-tight) pants

Most popular kids pants brands

There are probably dozens of pants brands that cater to kids. Here are few well-known brands (and retailers with their own store brands) which you may want to check out: Walmart, Target, The Children’s Place, Amazon, Gap, H&M, Kohl’s, Dickies, Lee, Wrangler.

Shopping tips for finding the perfect-fitting pants

  • Tip #1: If you can, bring your kids with you when shopping for their clothes so they can try them on right away.
  • Tip #2: If you can’t bring your kids, bring a pair of pants that you know fits them well. Lay the old pants on top of the one you’re planning to buy to see if they have the same measurements.
  • Tip #3: Anticipate growth spurts and buy pants that are one size larger. In the meantime, have your children wear a belt if necessary.
  • Tip #4: Keep an updated record of your child’s waist, hip and inseam measurements on your phone. You may also write them on an index card and place it in your wallet for easy access and safekeeping.
  • Tip# 5: Brand loyalty makes shopping for children’s clothes a little bit easier. If you already know your child’s clothing size for a specific brand, you won’t have to keep referring to size charts and conversion tables to find a pair of pants that fit.

Cleaning tips for kids pants

  1. Always read the care label before washing the pants.
  2. If your child’s pants are machine-washable, fill the basin in cold water and use gentle detergent.
  3. Pants made of delicate and expensive fabrics (e.g. silk) should be cleaned by professionals.
